How to boost volume past 100% in Chrome
Multiplying the volume is the easy part. What happens to the peaks decides how it sounds.
Chrome has no setting for this. Every volume booster works the same way: it re-routes a tab's audio through the browser's Web Audio engine and multiplies it. Multiplying is trivial. What a booster does with the peaks that no longer fit decides whether 400% sounds loud or broken.

None of these need an extension, and for anything outside the browser they are better than one.
- Check the source. A quiet video is often quiet because it was recorded that way. Gain raises the hiss along with the voice, so a bad recording gets louder, not clearer.
- On Windows, open Settings, System, Sound and turn on Enhance audio. It includes loudness equalization, which evens out quiet and loud passages across the whole machine rather than one tab.
- Windows also has a per-app volume mixer. It is relative to the master level, so it can divide volume between apps but never add any.
- macOS has no built-in way past 100%. There is no equivalent toggle, which is why Mac users end up at an extension or a paid app.
- Wired headphones with their own amplifier, or a small USB DAC, add real headroom. Hardware wins here because it gets louder before anything is distorted.
Why most boosters turn to gravel past 200%
Digital audio has a hard ceiling. Every sample is a number between -1 and +1, and that range is the entire scale. There is no louder value to store.
A booster multiplies every sample by the same amount. At 300%, a sample sitting at 0.5 becomes 1.5. A sample of 1.5 cannot exist, so the output stage chops it back to 1.0.
Do that thousands of times a second and smooth waves come out flat-topped. Flat tops are square waves, and square waves are built from harsh high harmonics that were never in the recording. That is the gravel.
What a limiter and a soft clip do instead
A limiter watches the signal and pulls the loudest parts down before they reach the ceiling. It reacts in milliseconds, so a drum hit or a consonant gets caught rather than flattened.
A soft clip then rounds off whatever is still close to the top. Rounding a peak reads to the ear as loudness. Squaring it reads as distortion. The difference is the entire argument.
The same signal that peaked at 4.92 comes out of that pair at exactly 1.000, with nothing chopped.
What no booster can fix
- The noise floor. Boosting a hissy recording gives you louder hiss. Tone shaping can help speech, but it cannot add detail that was never captured.
- Your hearing and your speakers. Small laptop speakers distort mechanically well before the software does, and sustained high volume damages hearing permanently.
- Audio streamed from another domain. Browser security rules stop a page routing that audio, so some sites cannot be boosted at all. A booster that stays silent about this looks broken instead.
How dashi does it
Up to 600%, with a limiter at 20:1 above -1.5 dBFS and a 2 ms attack, followed by a soft-clip curve. Both stages switch off at or below 100%, because nothing under the ceiling can cross it.
Three tone presets sit in front of the boost. Voice cuts rumble below 110 Hz and 6 dB of mud at 300 Hz. It then lifts 9 dB where consonants live, which is what rescues a muffled recording. Bass lifts the low end and trims the mud it would otherwise create.
Settings are remembered per site, and dashi asks for access to that one site rather than all of them. If a tab cannot be boosted, the panel says why.
